What is the best creatine for women?

Buy plain creatine monohydrate powder, the same creatine men take. Our pick is BulkSupplements, about $4.26 a month, with a lab test and an NSF check. Of the 11 creatines made for women in Amazon's top 24 results, none has either, and they cost 2 to 8 times as much per 5 g.*1, 2, 4, 5

Take 5 g a day. Then see what the women's add-ins really give you.

Why this one for women. Women take the same creatine monohydrate as men, so the rule doesn't change: proof of the dose, then the lowest cost. See how we pick.*3, 23

Why not a creatine made for women? You pay more for extras, and most extras come in amounts below what studies used. The creatine inside is the same.*5, 13

Why not Nutricost? It's the top plain creatine in this search, and it met its label in a lab test (98%). But it isn't NSF-listed, and it costs $0.21 per 5 g.*1, 4, 6

Why not Thorne? Healthline and two other top Google results for this search call it the best overall, and it's NSF Certified for Sport. But we found no public lab test of it, and it costs $0.47 per 5 g, more than 3 times our pick.*4, 6

None of the 11 creatines made for women has proof of its dose

We read the first 24 Amazon results for "creatine for women." 11 are sold as made for women. None has a published lab test or a listing with NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport or Informed Choice. The 9 that state their dose cost 2 to 8 times as much per 5 g as our pick. Will creatine make a woman gain weight or bloat?

It may add a little water weight at first, mostly if you "load" with about 20 g a day. Without loading, longer studies mostly found no change in total body water.*7, 8

Bloating itself hasn't been well tested in women. One review notes women often report bloating in the second half of their cycle anyway, so it's hard to pin on creatine. Skip the loading phase to keep any change small.*9

Do the add-ins in women's creatine do anything?

Mostly not at these doses. 10 of the 11 add collagen, and 7 of the 8 that list an amount have less than the 3.5 to 4 g most skin studies used. The other add-ins below were studied at much higher doses, or only in people with a health condition. We didn't look into the added vitamins and minerals.*5, 13

BulkSupplements Creatine Monohydrate Powder
Add-inIn these productsWhat the studies used
Collagen500 mg to 5 g, in 10 of 111 to 10 g a day for skin, most often about 3.5 to 4 g. Skin moisture and stretch improved a little.*13, 14
BCAA500 mg to 1 g, where listedLess soreness after hard workouts, with bigger doses working better. No human study shows BCAA alone builds muscle.*15, 16
L-glutamine1 g (Bold Buns)A review of 25 trials in athletes found no effect on performance or body makeup.*17
Myo-inositol500 mg (Clean Nutra)Studied only in women with PCOS. Even there, a 2024 review called the evidence "limited and inconclusive."*18
Biotin10,000 mcg (Clean Nutra)No good evidence it helps hair unless you lack it. The FDA warns that biotin can cause wrong results on some lab tests. Tell your doctor if you take it.*19, 20

Does creatine help women after menopause?

A little for muscle. For bone, trials so far found no benefit. A 2026 review of 7 trials in 608 women after menopause found a small gain in lean mass (about 0.4 kg) and leg strength. That gain showed up only with at least 5 g a day plus weight training.*10

Two 2-year trials found no effect on bone density, one at 3 g a day and one at a higher dose based on body weight. Some authors of the 2026 review advise Alzchem, which makes creatine.*10–12

Questions people ask

How much creatine should a woman take a day?
Take 5 g a day, every day, the same as men. Reviews give 3 to 5 g as the usual range, but after menopause the trials that found muscle gains used at least 5 g a day with weight training. You don't need to load.*7, 10, 24
When should I take creatine?
Any time of day. Taking it every day matters more than when you take it. Mix it into water, juice or a smoothie.*7
Is creatine safe for women?
For healthy adults, yes, based on current studies, including trials in women up to 2 years long. Ask your doctor first if you have kidney disease or take medicine for a health condition.*7, 11, 12
Can I take creatine while pregnant or breastfeeding?
There are no good human safety trials in pregnancy or breastfeeding yet. Most of the evidence comes from animal studies. Ask your doctor before you take it. Creatine can also raise creatinine on a kidney blood test without harming your kidneys, so tell your doctor you take it.*7, 8, 21
Does creatine cause hair loss?
A 2021 review by creatine researchers found no evidence that it does. The worry comes from one small study in young men that measured a hormone linked to hair loss, not hair loss itself.*7
Should I buy creatine with collagen in it?
Not to get the collagen. Most skin studies used about 3.5 to 4 g of collagen a day, and 7 of the 8 women's blends that list an amount have less. If you want both, buy them separately.*5, 13
Will creatine help me lose weight?
No. Creatine isn't a fat burner. It helps you lift a little more, which can help you build muscle over time. Your weight may go up slightly at first from water in your muscles.*7
Are creatine gummies for women a good choice?
Only if the gummy holds its dose. In published lab tests, 15 of 25 gummy brands fell short of their label. We found no test of the 4 women's gummies in our table.*5, 22

Notes and sources

  • Amazon results: the first 24 products for the search "creatine for women" on Amazon US, Oct 19, 2026, in the order shown. "Made for women" means the product name says it's for women; Create says "for women and men," so we count it as plain. The order changes often.*5
  • Registries: we searched NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport and Informed Choice for every brand in the 24 and opened each listing. Informed tests only for banned substances, so it isn't proof of the dose, but no women's formula had it either.*3, 4
  • Cost per 5 g = price ÷ servings × (5 ÷ creatine per serving). Add-in amounts come from the listing text. Some Supplement Facts panels are images we couldn't read, so a few amounts are missing. OFFPTE and ARDORACON don't print gummies per serving; we used 4, from 120 gummies sold as a 30-day supply. Wellah's 3 g comes from the label of its sister listing. Clean Nutra's page didn't load on our second read, so its amounts come from our first read that day.*6
  • Google results: we read the 8 pages that show up most for "best creatine for women" on Oct 19, 2026. Most say plain monohydrate is the form to buy, yet several still pick blends. None reports a lab test of the creatine it picks.
  • We'd change our pick after a failed test, a lost NSF listing, or a cheaper product with proof. Next check: January 2027. Illustration (generated image): the hero photo. The product photo comes from Amazon.
